Toyota Tacoma Ground Clearance Driver’s Guide

The specs described below are important to consider, but unless you have a tool for measuring angles in the field, there’s not much use in knowing the angles. Therefore, you want to either:

toyota tacoma off-road

  • Take the time to consider these stats before tackling a specific obstacle, OR…
  • Get out your tape measure and figure out these angles on your truck so that you have some idea. That way, you can try and do some rough reckoning on the trail.
  1. Suspension Travel. The amount of suspension travel that your setup allows you will greatly influence the type of terrain you can traverse and at what speed you can move across rough ground.
  2. AOA and AOD. It is also important to be aware of your truck’s approach and departure angles, aka “angle of attack” and “angle of departure.” These are related not just to the ride height of your Tacoma, but also the length of the front and rear overhangs. If you draw an imaginary line from the bottom of your pickup’s front tire to the bottom edge of its front bumper, the angle between that line and the ground is the approach angle – the angle at which you can tackle a slope without planting the bumper. The same idea is used for the departure angle, which gives you an idea of how aggressive you can be on a hill or rock face before dragging your rear bumper. In general, the shorter the overhang the better the angle, which is why you see so many 4×4 Tacoma’s with stubby aftermarket bumpers.
  3. Break-over angle. You will also hear trail drivers talk about break-over angle, which is the angle between the underside of your truck and bottom of the front and rear tires. This indicates the point at which your Tacoma will get hung up on an outcropping or other narrow obstacle, potentially leaving it stranded.

Lifted Toyota Tacoma: Should You Lift Your Taco?

So, the main question is why do you want to lift? Is it just for look? Cause everyone else and soccer mom drives a lifted truck? Or for increased clearance and off road capability?

  1. If I do will it worsen my gas mileage if I keep the same tires on it? Yes, cause gas mileage will worsen due to increased drag.
  2. What kind of price would be fair? You can spend from a few hundred $$$ to a few thousand $$$$ on a lift. You pay for the quality. If you want it just for a look – buy cheap.
  3. Will a 3″ lift cause any reliability issues? It could affect reliability long term cause it does wear out components a tad faster.
  4. I want to putt 33’s on it, do I need to use spacers? Yes. Spacer lifts will strain your suspension by forcing it into a position it wasn’t meant to be in, they will also limit your wheel travel when offroading. If you’re looking to stay on a lower budget I would say go with Bilstein 6112’s front and 5160’s for the rear. You can run stock front springs or get a set of OME springs (might be wrong about using OME springs). You could also do a full OME Nitrocharger lift(my current setup) for a little more but around the same quality.

Is It Legal To Lift Or Lower Your Truck?

Many truck owners are understandably concerned about how a leveling kit or lift kit will affect their warranty. There are two answers to this question:

  1. The law protects vehicle owners. The Magnusson-Moss act makes it illegal for an auto manufacturer or auto dealer to void a warranty just because a vehicle has been modified. The only way that a vehicle warranty can be affected is if the lift or leveling kit is the direct cause of a failure.
  2. Some dealers are “cooler” about lift kits than others. Some Toyota dealers view themselves as the keepers of the sacred warranty flame, and they refuse to warranty anything unless a customer yells and screams. Other dealers, wise to the ways of the world, embrace owners who install lift kits and even install after-market lift kits themselves. If you can do your new vehicle service work at a dealer who sells brand-new lifted trucks, you’ll probably never have a warranty argument about your lift kit.
