Honda CR-V Ground Clearance Driver’s Guide

The 2019 Honda CR-V is as ubiquitous as it is useful. The roomy five-seat crossover offers a versatile shape and innovative tech—inside and out, and impressive crash-test scores and excellent fuel economy.

The current crop of CR-V models are basically a crossover like most of the market is saturated with, and thus there won’t be any serious off-road driving done in a CR-V model.

Honda CR-V Ground Clearance Comparison Chart

MODEL MINIMUM CLEARANCE MAXIMUM CLEARANCE
2019 Nissan Rogue 7.4 ” (188 mm) 8.4 ” (213 mm)
2019 Subaru Forester 8.7 ” (220 mm) 8.7 ” (220 mm)
2019 Toyota RAV-4 8.4 ” (213 mm) 8.6 ” (218 mm)

CR-V overcomes obstacles that would snag the RAV4.  CR-V has 18″ wheels (compared to 17″ on RAV4) for a more aggressive look that fills out the wheel wells.  These wheels contribute to the firmer ride in the Honda.

Lifted Honda CR-V: CRV Lift Kit or Bigger Tires?

Early cute-utes like the first Honda CR-Vs, Toyota RAV4s and Mercedes MLs have the off-road competence to get across gravel, and a good set of tires plus a shovel will get you the rest of the way to wherever you could possibly want to go.

The design of these early compact SUVs, the first crossovers, really, even looks reasonably rugged compared to today’s jellybeans.

Put some big-ass knobby tires on an old CR-V and become an instant badass. It’s likely that you’ll be replacing axles and ball joints more often than you might like to, but I have a feeling you’ll be more mobile than your Jeep buddies since you’ll be burning about half the fuel to go twice as far.

Honda CR-V Lowered: Pros and Cons

thumbs-up-icon

Pros
  • Improved aerodynamics
  • Better handling and traction
  • Reduced risk of rollover

thumbs-down-icon

Cons
  • Increased bottoming out
  • Unevenness in the tire wear
  • Conflict with other systems and components

The bottom line is that changing your suspension has both positive and negative effects on your vehicle. It’s best to talk about this process with a trained mechanic who can help you think through all the implications. Don’t make any suspension changes until you’re confident about how they will pan out.

Air ride but the fender and front bumper were trimmed back the width of the trim on the fender above the wheel and the tires were a +1 to 215/70 R15. Like riding on a cushion of air once you find the sweet spot. By far best ride I have had on this car. If you live in a cold climate I would not recommend air ride, it likes to leak down in cold temps.
